Monster Fish Rescue's History
About Monster Fish Rescue
Monster Fish Rescue is a non-profit L.L.C. dedicating our efforts to educating the public of the growing epidemic of big chain pet stores selling “monster” fish and to helping to place these monster fish in appropriate homes.
Since the country seems to be going corporate, the days of small town pet stores are pretty much a thing of the past. This causes a problem with the novice hobbyist who goes into a Wal-Mart, PetCo and other such places to purchase a cute little fish that in a few months turns into a 30" monster that's eating them out of house and home or starts aggressively destroying the other fish in its tank. Not to mention most of these hobbyists don't have nearly a large enough aquarium to sustain these fish for a long and happy life.
In small town pet stores the educated salesperson would steer people away from these fish or make sure that they purchased a large enough tank to keep the beast in.
The problem now is these inexperienced fish keepers who buy the "cute little fish" are either leaving the fish once they have out grown their tanks in a bucket at the front door step of the corporate run "pet stores" (who themselves do not have the facilities to keep the fish). Ninety percent of the time the fish is either euthanized or crammed into a small glass box to suffer till it dies.
The only other option these inexperienced fish keepers feel they have is releasing them into the wild. In the summer months these tropical fish will thrive in our bodies of water spreading disease and decimating ecosystems. In the south these fish will survive the winter and become a keystone species affecting everything in its new environment.
This is a growing problem and with your help you can spread the word about MFR to try and stop the sales of these certain fishes. Until then the answer is Monster Fish Rescue.
In addition to taking in “monster fish”, we will take any fish big or small for whatever reason no questions asked. We also accept any aquarium equipment you want or need to get rid of, see "contact us" button and send us an email. If you would like to make a cash donation to support our mission please click on the “Make a Donation” button!
Please CONTACT us with any questions and we will be happy answer them.

A Description of how exactly Monster Fish Rescue operates:
Think of MFR as a dog pound for fish. Dropping a fish off or having us come and pick one up requires a small donation, much like if you were to drop a dog off at the dog pound. We care for the fish, sometimes nurse it back to health and usually try to re-home the fish. This costs money. That's why we ask for a donation when you drop a fish off. When a fish is adopted out we make sure that the new owner is educated on proper care and tank size for the fish. We offer tank set ups and ongoing advice to the new owner. Again an adoption fee applies and varies on the fish and it's time spent in our care. We also operate on the support of you, the consumer and hobbyist. Your cash donations keep us alive and operational helping re-locate these fish that are in need of proper homes. Thank you for your support!
